Sydney FC v Arsenal FC

So, we played our first pre-season game today against Sydney FC.

We started well and that was reflected on the scoreline with Mertesaoker netting inside 5 mins.

The corner from Ozil was accurate and it was headed on but fell to the BFG who, with his back to goal kicked it over his head inside the far post.

As the half went on Mesut delivered a number of corners into dangerous positions so I wonder if that’s something he’s been working on over the summer.

Nelson is a youngster who got the nod from the start and his movement and link up play really impressed me today. At 17 years old he’s certainly looks like a promising talent and I expect to see him in a few cup games this season.

Arsenal wouldn’t Arsenal without gifting the opposition a chance so we duly obliged. Sydney’s right back stepped into our half with the ball midway through the first half at which point I felt Bramall could’ve stepped forward to close him down.

Anyway, he was given time and our central midfielder (not sure if it was Willock or Coquelin) lost his man who the right back picked out in the inside left channel. He ghosted past Per and forced a save from Cech who parried it wide to another Sydney player who, from a tight angle, hit the outside of the post.

The rest of the first half was uneventful and the second half started with the usual pattern of Arsenal keeping the ball.

On the 53 rd min Welbeck got in and squared it to Theo (who got into a few good scoring positions) who took the shot that was deemed to have been blocked by the defenders arm. It was his back but the ref awarded a pen which Welbeck stepped up to and tamely hit it to the beepers right where it was saved.

There was a host of changes on the 68th min which included the introduction of Mr. Lacazette.

we had several chances which included an Ox free kick and Nketiah hitting post.

It was the latter who smartly won the ball in the 83′ min and set lwobi free down our right.

The Nigerian travelled into the box and pulled it back to our new number 9 who tucked it home first time.

I’ve no doubt it was a feeling of relief to get his first goal out of the way.

I don’t much can be taken away from this game due to it being a friendly but the youngsters certainly would’ve benefitted from the experience and haven’t done their chances any harm.

We go on to play on Saturday before bringing our Aussie Tour to an end. It’s certainly good to have Arsenal back.

Yesterday we also released our 3rd kit, which we wore today.

I don’t mind it and think we’re definitely had worse since Puma took over and we won in it too so long may that continue.

That’s all from me, have a great evening.
